Words from Ivor Livingston, Professor and Chair of the HU Sociology and Anthropology Department

I feel very fortunate to have seen him for the last time yesterday, although he was not responsive, in the ICU unit of the Washington Hospital Center. I also feel extremely fortunate that he came by my office the same day of the accident and after he spoke of administrative matters (e.g., submitting of his final grades), and other more jovial matters, including his upcoming vacation to my homeland, Jamaica, which would be exclusively taken (not with his "boys"), but with his wife, Cynthia, and adorable 2-year old daughter. We talked and joked about how the island had changed since the 26 years he has been visiting it and what "relaxing experiences" he was looking forward to having in the "secluded vacation hide-away" he had chosen. For him, life could not be better, as he looked forward to fun and a well-deserved period of relaxation in the warmth and receptive atmosphere of the countryside of Jamaica. I have never seen him so relaxed and contented as he bid me farewell to have lunch with some of his graduating students. Occasions as this continue to remind us of the fact that tomorrow is not promised to us!
