Shomarka emailed me about Mark's untimely death. All I can do is offer my
sincere condolences...It's been many many years since I last saw Mark, but
I still have very fond memories of him at UF.

I am completely stunned! I am sitting here getting ready to start the work day and all I can think about is how wonderful Mark was and how this is truly a great loss! My mother was completely smitten with him and we enjoyed his company during our visit to South Africa in 1998 for the World Archaeological Congress. We joked that we were some how related--as he easily looked like a member of my extended family and had the same surname. He always had wonderful, kind words for me--to inspire me to keep with my dissertation work. This is the first time in a long time I am rendered speechless. His commitment to his people and his body of work have and will continue to inspire generations to come.
